An anti-drug team in collaboration with  Dubai Police foiled an attempt to smuggle drugs into the Central Prison in Dubai.

The drugs were to be smuggled into the prison by a 35-year-old Ugandan cleaner who works in the prison and stays in Jebel Ali. The arrest of the accused was made near his house.

Major General Abdul Jalil Mahdi, Director General of the Anti-Narcotics Department of Dubai Police, said the attempt shows the risks that drug traffickers are willing to take despite the high price they pay by spending a good part of  their lives behind the bars.

The accused, NA, admitted to possessing drugs. He said he got it from 26-year-old SAH to bring it into the jail for another man, MAM, 37, who has a criminal record and has been jailed in drug-related cases.

It was the second arrest of the accused SHA who was earlier arrested on theft charges.

Things seized from SHA included mobile phones, cannabis, 357 tablets of a narcotic and filters for smoking.

The accused were referred to prosecution on charges of possession of narcotic substances and introducing contraband into prison.

The other defendants were charged with promotion of narcotic substances and attempting to bring them into the prison.
