An appeals court in Fujeirah sentenced an Emirati man to death after he was convicted of using a sword to murder another Emirati, triggering relief among the victim’s relatives who have insisted on the death of the defendant.

The defendant, identified only as AMA, had been sentenced to death by another court in the eastern emirate, prompting him to appeal. The case was then sent to the Supreme Federal Court, which ordered a fresh trial.

The appeals court on Wednesday found him guilty of premeditated murder by using a “Ninja” sword to kill another Emirati man, identified as MAS.

“The victim’s relatives were present in court when the sentence was issued…they received the sentence with relief,” the Arabic language daily Al khaleej said.

“It quoted Rashid Al Dahouri, the victim’s brother, as saying:”We are grateful for our country’s fair judiciary, which achieved justice for my brother…we thank the court for this fair sentence.”

The paper quoted the judge as saying the defendant cannot appeal again and would be executed with the available means used in carrying out death sentences in the UAE.

Execution in the UAE is carried out by a firing squad and has to be ratified by the country’s President.
