A 37-year-old Egyptian taxi driver allegedly tried to molest a woman passenger who was sitting next to him in the vehicle, the Dubai Criminal Court heard.

The victim, SS, 29, Ukrainian, testified that on April 9 at around 3am, she left a night club in a hotel with her sister, brother-in-law and a friend and took a taxi to another hotel where they were staying.

She sat on the front seat next to the driver and the other three passengers on the back seat.

“The driver touched my leg and attempted to lift the long dress I was wearing. I pushed his hand and shouted at him saying: ‘Are you crazy?’ But he tried to repeat that. When we reached the hotel, my brother-in-law asked the driver  to wait until the police arrive. I went up to my room and knew that they had a fight. Then the police came,” she testified.
Her brother-in-law, MA, 30, Ukrainian trader, repeated the same testimony, saying that he did not get down from the taxi and told the driver that he will call the police.

“The driver insisted that I should get off the car and threatened that he had a number of friends and that he will cause problems for me. He tried to push me out of the car and I pushed him back. So he called the police,” he testified.

The victim’s sister, CA, 29, Russian, testified although the normal taxi fare between the two hotels is not more than Dh14, the driver asked for Dh50 and they agreed to go with him.

“I saw the driver when he groped my sister’s leg after which she shouted at him and pushed back his hand. I paid him the Dh50 he wanted and my husband asked me to go back into the hotel,” she testified.

The court will reconvene on October 16.
