A drunk thief lit a cigarette and stood smoking in the corner of the bedroom after kissing a sleeping woman, the Dubai Criminal Court heard.

MM, 26, Emirati, was sleeping next to her husband in the bedroom of their flat in JBR when she felt that a man was kissing her.

“I woke up and opened my eyes to see the face of a stranger on my head. When he noticed that I had woken up, he moved quickly to a corner of the room and lit a cigarette. I woke up my husband and told him about the smoking man in the corner,” MM told investigators.

The husband got up and caught the man who smelt of alcohol. He pulled him to the building’s security guard after calling the police.

“My wife was in a state of shock when she woke me up. I got up and approached the man who was still smoking. I smelt alcohol when I was catching him,” the husband told investigators.

Police were already searching for a drunk who had been reported by a Palestinian. The Palestinian had informed the police about a man who had entered his flat. He had kicked the man out of his flat when he noticed that he was drunk. He then informed the police, Corporal Kalid Ali told investigators.

“Ten minutes later, we received information that a drunk man had entered another flat and had been being caught by the owner,” said the policeman.

The police patrol went to the place and arrested WA, 40, Saudi visitor. who was drunk. However, WA was conscious enough to throw into the police car money that he had stolen from the Emirati family’s flat. Police found the money in the car and also confiscated the wallet of KA, husband of the Emirati wife.

KA, 27, Emirati, told the police that the accused could have entered the house through the rear service door which he had forgotten to lock. He also said that his wallet was on the table.

WA is being prosecuted for molesting MM, entering a property against its owner’s will, stealing and consuming alcohol.

Although WA had admitted before the prosecution that he had consumed alcohol, he denied all charges when he appeared before the court. But he admitted to taking the wallet and claimed that it was by mistake.

The court will give its sentence on November 17.
