A jobless Afghan allegedly targeted motorists holding bags nearby financial institutions, puncturing their car’s tyres and stealing their bags while they were replacing the damaged tyre, the Dubai Criminal Court heard.

In one of the cases reported against MJ, 33, a Pakistani driver was assigned by his boss to collect about Dh300,000 remitted to him through a money exchange company.

“On July 7 last year, at around 9.45pm, I went to the money exchange and collected the amount in a bag and went out to where I had parked the car. I put the bag on the front passenger seat and then drove away towards Marina area where I stay.

“Half the way through, I stopped in the middle of the street following explosion of one of the tyres. I got out of the car and checked the tyres. I found that the back right tyre was punctured.

“While I was replacing the tyre, I remembered the bag on the front seat. I rushed and opened the front right door but the bag was already stolen,” the driver told the police.

The victim reported the theft to the police and the punctured tyre was technically and microscopically tested.

Criminal Evidences reported that the tyre was punctured with a knife.

Police officer Saif Sulaiman noted that a number of similar complaints had been reported by motorists during the same period.

After about nine months, police arrested MJ on suspicion of committing similar crimes. Police confiscated from MJ a knife blade. Criminal Evidences reported that the same knife had been used in puncturing the tyre in this case.

After arrest, police referred MJ to Fujairah to face allegations in similar cases. After he finished his sentence in Fujairah, he was sent back to Dubai to face theft allegations.
