A Syrian housewife allegedly conned customers by taking cash meant as fees for urgent transactions and then forging receipt of a government department, the Dubai Criminal Court heard.

DG, 31, who is accused of stealing a total of Dh29,500 from four customers defended herself by saying that she did that as she needed money.

The crime was unveiled when on September 17, 2014, a representative from an advocate office approached the Land Department and presented a receipt to an employee to check a certain transaction.

The employee suspected the validity of the receipt as it was signed by an employee whom she never had never heard of. The employee checked with her senior who had been working in the department for the last 12 years.

As the senior had also never met the said employee, he checked the receipt.

“I was shocked to find that an employee with this name had never worked in the department. Upon checking the receipt, I found out that it was forged. We asked the advocate company to explain who they got that receipt from,” SA, manager at the Land Department told investigators.

The advocate office investigated the case and found out that a housewife who freelanced for the office against commission per client had given the receipt after the client had paid the urgent fees.

The department contacted the woman and asked her to come and inform about the employee who collected the fees from her.

The woman failed to appear in the department twice and instead she called the advocate office and admitted forging receipts of four clients.

She claimed that she did that because she was undergoing financial difficulties. The court will reconvene on June 16.
