Woman, two men caught smuggling 2kg gold

Customs officers at the Bandaranaike International Airport in Sri Lanka caught a 54-year-old woman and two men, aged 38 and 50, smuggling 2,267gms of gold to India on Wednesday, ‘The Island’ reported.

About 10 pieces of gold weighing one kilogram each had been hidden by the two male smugglers in their private parts and unfinished gold jewellery weighing 267gms had been worn by the woman.

Customs department spokesman Leslie Gamini said that the smugglers were regular travellers from Colombo to India. he also added that 48 people who had attempted to smuggle gold from the country to various other countries had been arrested in 2013.

He said after being fined Rs 50,000 each, the two men were released and the contraband had been forfeited while the investigations against the woman were continuing.
