Mom leaves newborn in toilet pit to die

Colombo: A young mother has been arrested in Kirindiwela for dumping her newborn in an abandoned toilet pit and leaving it to die, reported ‘Lankadeep’.

The woman put her newborn in the pit and covered it with coconut branches. None of her roommates knew she had delivered, the report added.

It was only when she had to be rushed to hospital because of severe bleeding the incident came to light.

Initial police investigations reveal that she is in a relationship with a person after her husband left for work abroad.

Mother and son run over by train

In a tragic accident a mother and her child were run over by a train in Akurala, reported local media.

The 28-year-old woman was taking her six-year-old son for swimming classes on her bike early this month, when they were hit by an oncoming train as they were on a railway crossing.

While the kid died on the spot, the woman succumbed to her injuries in hospital later.

One-year old drowns in water pond

A one-year old boy drowned in a water pond dug by his father in Senevigama area near his home, reported ‘Lankadeep’.

The pond - two-and-half feet deep and four-foot wide – was filled with rain water.

The toddler’s father, who dug the pond to wash gem stones, was not at the site when the accident happened. The kid had gone with two older children to play and accidently slipped into the water pond.

The toddler was spotted by his mother who had gone searching for her child on finding him missing.

Gang shoots mom-of-three dead

An armed gang of four broke into a house in Sevanagala at dawn early this month and shot dead the woman, while seriously injuring her husband, reported ‘Lankadeep’.

The 49-year-old woman, a mother of three, who was sleeping with her husband attempted to stop the gang from looting their place when they opened fire.
