Saudi police arrested an Arab barber for cutting off the moustache of a Saudi customer while having a shave at his shop in the Gulf Kingdom.

The barber in the western Saudi town of Makkah was released on bail after eight days but he would stand trial on charges of shaving off the client’s moustaches without his consent, Okaz daily said.

It quoted the customer’s lawyer as saying he would ask court to jail the barber for two months for causing moral damage to his client.

The lawyer, Saad Al Qahtani, told Sharq Arabic language daily he first tried to resolve the problem out of court, adding that the barber said he was willing to pay damages but that his client refused and insisted on trial.

The incident took place on Friday when the Saudi man, in his 40s, went into the barber shop and asked its owner to trim his beard.

“The Saudi man’s chin was moving sideways and upside down because he was chewing…the barber’s scissors then moved up by accident and cut part of the man’s moustaches…this made him very furious,” Sharq said.

“The Saudi then stood up and started screaming at the barber, who pushed him away..…the Saudi now insists on prosecuting the barber on charges of hurting his dignity by cutting part of his moustaches.”

Quoted by the Saudi news network Alarabiya, an unnamed Moslem scholar said the problem could be simply tackled.

“The problem is not that complicated…a little compensation for pushing the Saudi could do while there should be no compensation for the lost part of the moustache because it will grow again.”

Saudi newspapers quoted a local journalist, Salman al Salmi, as saying the 35-year-old barber cut off nearly one centimeter of the Saudi man’s moustache and that the customer immediately went mad when he looked into the mirror.

“They then both pushed each other and the Saudi fell down, hurting his nose…I believe the barber did not intend to offend his customer but he should have told him to stop chewing…this could allowed to avert the problem,” he said.

Salmi said he was told by the Saudi customer that the barber offered him SR10,000 but that he rejected it.

“The Saudi is adamant on prosecuting the poor barber, who opened his little shop only two years ago…its only around 20 square metres,” he said.
