A Saudi court ordered a local man lashed 80 times in public after he was caught driving while drunk on the lane assigned for diplomats on King Fahd Causeway linking the Gulf Kingdom with nearby Bahrain, a newspaper reported on Tuesday.

The driver, in his 30s, confessed in court that he had alcoholic drinks in Bahrain before returning home in Saudi Arabia through the 25-km-long bridge.

Police guarding the causeway chased the driver and arrested him as he took the diplomatic lane, Sabq Arabic language daily said.

“When they arrested him, they found that the driver was drunk…they took him to the police station,” the paper said in a report from the Eastern Saudi port of Khobar.

“The judge sentenced him to 80 lashes in a public place and referred him to the traffic police to take measures against him for driving under the influence of alcohol.”
