Saudis who abuse their parents will be forced to dig graves and wash the dead under a new punitive law approved by the Gulf kingdom this week.

The kingdom’s supreme justice council issued a circular to courts in the largest Arab economy asking them to enforce this punishment against those found guilty of insulting or beating their fathers or mothers.

“Those convicted of such offences will now be punished by digging graves and washing the dead for a specific period of time depending on the offence,” Al Watan daily said.

It said the council issued the circular following a recommendation by the interior minister to replace jail sentences with the new penalty.

Hospital head sacked for waving shoe in worker’s face

Saudi health authorities sacked the head of a government hospital after he threatened to hit an employee with his shoe, a newspaper reported on Friday.

Police had summoned the hospital chief following a complaint by an employee that he took off his shoe, waved it in his face and threatened to hit him with it.

“We received the police report…we decided to relieve the hospital head from all his duties and not appoint him in any leading position in the future,” said Mubarak Asiri, director of the health department in the southern Asir province.

Sabq newspaper said police charged the head King Fahd Hospital in Asir of insulting the employee after four other workers testified.
