Saudi authorities sacked a local Koran memorisation teacher caught on camera brutally lashing a 10-year-old pupil with a stick in front of his colleagues at a mosque. The boy’s father told authorities he had allowed the teacher to punish his “naught” son but not in such a savage way.
“After meeting the teacher and the boy’s father, we decided to sack the teacher and refer the student for psychiatric treatment,” said Al Shareef al Ghaeb, head of the Koran Memorisation Association in the western Saudi town of Makkah. Saudi newspapers on Sunday carried a YouTube film showing the teacher using a stick to whip his pupil who tried to run away.
The teacher then caught the boy and hurled him down on the floor before resuming his lashing.
