Saudi Arabia’s police caught nearly 5,000 drivers offending traffic rules in the eastern region of the Gulf Kingdom in just three days, an average of more than one offence ever minute, a newspaper reported on Friday.

Police hunted the offenders through cameras and in their presence during a sudden campaign over the past three days, Sabq said.

They involved 2,436 speeding and seat belt offences, 808 jumping the red lights, 755 offences for smudging car plates and other violations.

Saudi Arabia and other Gulf oil producers are among the countries having the highest rates of traffic offences in the world.
