Saudi expels British 'wine-maker' after one-year jail

Saudi Arabia deported a 74-year-old Briton after he served one year in prison on charges of making wine at his home in the conservative Gulf Kingdom.

Dubbed the “wine-maker”, Carl Andree had also faced 350 lashes but the sentenced was not carried out following high-level contacts between the two countries.

Sabq newspaper said Andree was arrested in August 2014 in the Western Red Sea port of Jeddah after he was caught with home-made wine.

“Andree was deported by the Kingdom to his home country this week after serving his jail term,” the paper said, adding that British Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond “expressed delight” at Andree’s release.
