Saudi Arabia’s ministry of trade and industry published the name of a local man in local newspapers with the aim of defaming him for issuing a bounced bank cheque.

Besides a court sentence to jail him for seven months, the man has also been ordered to fund his own defamation by paying for the newspaper advertisement.

Sabq newspaper published the advertisement which identified the man as Mahmoud Yehya Majrashi and was titled ‘defamation for a crime’.

It quoted the ministry as saying in the advertisement: ‘This citizen has issued a cheque which bounced and was sentenced by the trade dispute court in Riyadh’.

Saudi school boy to be lashed in class after fight

A Saudi school boy will get 30 lashes in class after a fight with another student during which he hit him with a chair, a newspaper reported on Monday.

The unnamed student in the secondary school in the western Saudi town of Taif hurled the chair at his class mate during a scuffle but it missed him and landed on the teacher without causing any injury, the Arabic language daily Sabq said.

“The court sentenced the school boy to seven days in jail and ordered him lashed 30 times in front of his class mates at school,” it said.
