Thief to have hand amputated in Saudi

A man convicted of stealing a food supply shop will have his hand amputated under a court sentence issued in Saudi Arabia on Sunday.

The court in the northwestern town of Hael found the man, in his 20s, guilty of burgling the shop and ordered the amputation of his hand from the wrist.

“The court found the thief guilty and handed down its sentence in accordance with Shariah (Islamic law),” the Arabic language daily Sharq said.

The paper did not identity the defendant or say whether he can appeal the verdict, which is normally carried out some weeks later.

Conservative Saudi Arabia, with a population of around 28 million, strictly enforces Islamic law in its judicial system.
