Wife claims infected by husband after he was declared Aids-free

A Saudi woman is suing the Ministry of Health after she was infected with Aids by her husband who she says was given an Aids-free certificate by a government hospital just before their marriage nearly four years ago.

Abrar, 21, said she overheard her husband telling relatives over the phone that he is suffering from the Acquired Immuno Deficiency Syndrome (Aids) a few months after their marriage although he was given a certificate from the hospital showing he is healthy.

“I then rushed to the hospital and underwent tests, which showed I was infected,” she said, quoted by Alwatan Arabic language daily.

She said the hospital in the western town of Qunfudah already knew her would-be husband was suffering from the killer disease, yet they gave him an Aids-free certificate he had requested under new marital laws in the Gulf Kingdom.

The paper said the court, after four years of hearings, granted the woman a divorce and would soon begin hearing her case against the Ministry of Health and the hospital.
