20-years RI to father raping eldest daughter

A father of four, who pledged guilty of raping his eldest daughter in front of the younger siblings after being drunk, has been condemned to 20 years rigorous imprisonment on Tuesday by Special High Court Judge Mrs. Khema Swarnadhipathi, ‘Lakbima’ reported.

The suspect had committed the crime on 17th December 1997 or closer around that point and he was likewise prescribed to pay compensation and a fine by the judge, police alleged.

The suspect has been identified as Rankoth Labunage Nimal Sumanaratne (53), a resident of Yaya 6, Mannar Junction in Mahawilachchiya.

The judge ordered the suspect to pay the victim a sum of Rs. 500,000 in compensation and a fine of Rs. 50,000, failing which he would be sentenced for a further two years RI and one-year light imprisonment.

Mahawilachchiya police arrested the suspect, who had been absconding the judiciary.

Three arrested for abduction a schoolgirl

A young man and two women, who were held on suspicion for abducting a grade 11 schoolgirl of a leading girls’ school in Borella and keeping her under their custody for three months, have been remanded till 23, after bring produced before the Additional Mount-Lavinia Magistrate Ms. Praharsha Ranasinghe, ‘Mawbima’ reported.

The suspects so sentenced were residents from Boralesgamuwa and Galle areas.

It was reported that the victim, a resident of Dehiwala, had developed a love affair with the young man, who had later abducted her and continued in his custody in Boralesgamuwa and Galle areas.

According to a complaint lodged by the victim’s mother at the Mirihana police, the young man was arrested along with his mother and an aunt for aiding.

The judge ordered that the girl be put under the detention of the probation and sent for a medical examination.
Mirihana police are conducting further investigations.
