Crime: Mom sells minor girl to man for $500

Published

A mother is accused of selling her minor daughter for $500 to be the wife of a deranged man, according to police reports.

A 12-year-old girl from Guizhou, a southwestern Chinese province, was sold by her mother for 3,500 yuan or about $551 to a family who needed a wife for an allegedly mentally deranged son.

The girl, named Jia Jia, was sold in August of last year in her hometown in Pingba County to a woman surnamed Xu in Guiyang, the provincial capital.

She was forced to have sex with the 30-year-old son of XU until her uncle rescued her a year later, according to the local Chinese newspaper.

The mother, surnamed Cai, gave birth to Jia Jia when she was 15. Her uncle took care of the girl but Cai was taken from her uncle in August last year, claiming she had to go work in a restaurant.

Both Cai and Xu denied knowing it was illegal to trade people.

Xu told reporters: "I was eager to find a wife for my son and I did not know I was breaking the law."

The two women were arrested for trafficking and Xu's son was arrested on charges of rape, according to the report. The son of Xu told the newspaper that his mother forced him to sleep with the girl.

A medical examination revealed that the girl had been sexually assaulted at a young age and may be infertile as a result, according to the report.

After discovering Jia Jia had been sold, his uncle called the family, saying that his grandfather was ill and insisted that the girl go. When Jia Jia arrived home in August, the uncle refused to let her go.

He called police when Xu, her son and other relatives tried to abduct her.

Daughter arrested in mother’s slaying

Police questioning a suspected drunken driver say they were tipped off to a homicide when he told them his wife was dead at their home.

Cottonwood Heights police say the body of 58-year-old Zita Gruodis (GROH’-diss) was found in the house Monday evening. KSL reports the woman’s 36-year-old daughter, Airida Maria Gruodis, was also home and has been arrested on suspicion of murder.

Police Sgt. Gary Young says it appeared the woman may have been dead for “some time.”

The investigation started when police say a man drove his car off a road in Little Cottonwood Canyon Monday afternoon. Police say they questioned driver Peter Gruodis, who told them he was upset and they could find his wife’s body at home.

Teen killed for color of shirt

Police say an Omaha teenager gunned down in October was killed because of the color of his shirt.

Sixteen-year-old Montrell Wiseman was shot and killed on Oct. 21. A 16-year-old girl also was shot and injured.

Police say five men charged in the shooting were going to steal alcohol that day, but instead decided to get revenge for the September shooting death of a fellow gang member. The group went to a rival gang area looking for anyone wearing red when they spotted Wiseman. Police say Wiseman was not affiliated with a gang.

The five men — Angelo Tolbert, Joshua Van Ackeren, Matthew Saunsoci, Adam Gamble, and Francis Cayou — were ordered Monday to stand trial. A sixth person, Nikole Gamble, is also charged, accused of hiding Tolbert from police.(AP)

Man cuts off leg to collect unemployment

A man cut off his leg in order to collect unemployment benefits, according to press reports.

Schoolchildren are known for their elaborate schemes in order to avoid going to school, even telling themselves over and over again that they are sick until they really get sick.

But what about adults who simply do not want to go to work? An Austrian man must have thought that an adult requires more drastic measures to fake a stomach ache. So, he cut off his own foot.

This is not a joke. An Austrian man really cut off his own foot according to press reports, to avoid returning to work when an official from the labor office has determined that he should go back to work.

Hours before a second meeting before the employment office to verify his health status, the 56-year-old placed his left leg against a chainsaw in his home workshop and cut his foot just above the ankle.

Bleeding profusely, the man in the province of Styria then tossed his cut off foot in a furnace, limped to his garage and called an ambulance. An emergency operation was unable to reattach the foot.

According to the local police chief, Franz Fasching, the man was still conscious when help arrived on the scene, but had lost a lot of blood. Fasching said the foot was so badly burned from the oven to recovered.

Police called this a desperate act of a man who wishes to continue receiving unemployment benefits.

The man will not be able to claim disability benefits after this horrendous act, the Minister of Social Affairs Rudolf Hundstorfer said, but should he be declared mentally deranged that could change, he said.
