Authorities say an Ohio auxiliary firefighter reported a fake fire so he could head to the scene and earn a paycheck, but a different department was dispatched instead and he is now facing charges.

Twenty-seven-year old Dean Evans, of Lorain, is charged with inducing panic and making false alarms.

Lorain County sheriff's deputies tell The Chronicle-Telegram in Elyria (https://bit.ly/1NeJxyw ) that Evans said he made the fake report in April so he could respond and earn $500. But the South Amherst Fire Department where Evans worked wasn't one of the two departments dispatched to the scene.

Police reports say investigators traced the 911 call to a number that Evans had listed on his auxiliary firefighter application.

Evans pleaded not guilty Wednesday. Court records show no attorney for him.
