Colombo: A couple found guilty of drug trafficking has been sentenced to death by the Colombo High Court in Sri Lanka last week.

The couple – a former soldier J.R.V and his wife U. I. S – was charged with possessing 22.91 grams of heroin.

The drugs were confiscated by the Police Drug Prevention Bureau in a raid carried out on May 15, 2010 in Thalahena. The scooter they were driving was stopped and on checking police found the substance hidden in the woman’s dress.

In a 116-page judgement, the court emphasized that “defendants need to be severely punished in order to convey a message to society”.

The couple has four children.
