SRI LANKA: A 22-year-old man faced a tragic death when an elephant attacked him while he was going to collect firewood for his livelihood in the early hours in a jungle near Sri Vallipuram in Kanchirankudah.

The deceased Rasiah Jeevan Kumar (22) was accompanied by his friend on his way to the jungle when an elephant hidden in the undergrowth in the jungle attacked him all of a sudden and smashed him to the ground.

His helpless friend hidden nearby rushed to him when the elephant moved away from the site and tried to take him to the Hospital, but all his efforts in taking him to hospital ended up in failure. Inquiries are in progress.

Elephant–human conflicts are on the rise in Ampara District and as a result either human or elephants are facing death quite often.

The people of these areas are requesting the authorities to take appropriate actions to control the situation, before it gets further aggravated.
