Woman rescued from Saudi home after 16 yrs

Colombo - The Sri Lankan Embassy in Saudi Arabia had rescued a woman, who had been in detention at a Saudi home for 16 years, after arriving in the country for employment, ‘Dinamina’ reported.

Her employer in Saudi had alleged to have kept her in detention after she left the island nation 16 years ago for employment.

Sri Lanka Foreign Employment Bureau’s Deputy General Manager Mangala Randeniya said that a special investigation would be initiated about the incident.

He said that the woman has been kept under the custody of the Sri Lankan Embassy until the investigations are over and steps would be taken to send her back to Sri Lanka after recovering the payments due to her from the employer.

The embassy had also made arrangements for the woman to contact her kith and kins in the Nuwara Eliya area, where she hails from, through skype.

Principal arrested for sexually abusing a schoolboy

Girandurukotte police said a principal of a primary school at Aluththarama in Girandurukotte has been arrested for sexually abusing a 17-year-old schoolboy from Ulhitiya area, ‘Rivira’ reported.

It was revealed that the principal had asked the boy to come to his residence for studies and abused him.

After the boy informed the incident to his parents, the suspect principal had been arrested upon a complaint lodged by them at the Girandurukotte police station.

The boy, who had failed the GCE (OL) examination at the first attempt, had been asked to come to the principal’s house to study for the second attempt.

The victim was first admitted to the Girandurukotte Base Hospital and later transferred to Mahiyangana hospital and then to Badulla General Hospital for medical examination.

The Acting Mahiyangana Magistrate had ordered that the suspect be remanded and according to a statement made by the schoolboy, the Magistrate had given an order to arrest a Buddhist monk who was also involved in the same incident. Girandurukotte police are continuing investigations.
