Ceva Logistics, which commenced activities in the Middle East early last year, is widening its business footprint in the region as part of its global expansion.

The Netherlands-based supply chain management provider has entered into two contracts with Middle East-based firms to bolster its activities in the region.

The company has entered into a contract with Wabco, a leader in the supply of safety and control systems for commercial vehicles, which appointed Ceva Logistics to manage its logistics and export services in the Middle East, North Africa and the Indian Subcontinent.

Under the contract, stated Ceva, it would warehouse, collect and pack Wabco's products in the Middle East and manage all inbound freight as part of a global lead service supplier agreement. It would also manage customs clearance and outbound exports from Dubai.

The second contract represents a renewal of Ceva's partnership with GO Sport – believed to be the largest distributor of sports gear in the UAE – for the management of the latter's supply chain in the Middle East.

The new contract, said Ceva, includes home delivery and assembly solutions with the support of a dedicated fleet. All activities would be carried out at a new Ceva warehouse in Jebel Ali Free Zone Authority (Jafza), "a site that plays a central role in the company's development strategy for the Middle East".

GO Sport, described as the third largest distributor of sports clothing, footwear and equipment in France, with 160 stores worldwide and five in the Middle East, started its co-operation with Ceva in 2007. "Today, 90 per cent of GO Sport's Middle Eastern supply chain is managed by Ceva, which processes more than 1.5 million garments, sporting equipment and accessories for the retailer," added Ceva.

As part of its move to strengthen its presence in the region and tap into the opportunities within the regional logistics industry, Ceva is investing more than Dh3 billion in the region over the next two years. Ceva is hoping to expand its operations by building new facilities, acquiring and merging with existing companies.

"We intend to maximise the opportunities presented by the region's logistics industry through an aggressive expansion plan to enable us to tap into the fast-growing market," Shamsudeen Ah-med, Regional Director of Ceva told Emirates Business recently.

The company, whose regional headquarters are in Jebel Ali, is in the process of expanding all its existing facilities within the region.

A state-of-the-art 63,000 square metre facility in Jebel Ali, which will provide integrated supply chain solutions, is under construction and is expected to be ready by mid-2009.

Ceva already has three branches in Saudi Arabia and has operations in Oman, Kuwait and Qatar.
