Three multi-storey car parks where Dubai Metro passengers will be able to leave their vehicles before boarding trains are being developed by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA).

The buildings at Al Rashidiya, Al Qusais and Jumeirah Islands will have space for 9,000 cars – and parking will be free for Metro users.

"Parking areas in many parts of the city are congested so we are building three large multi-level parking buildings," said Ramadan Abdullah, Director of the RTA's Unified Card Department. "For Dubai Metro passengers parking will be absolutely free. They can use Nol cards to get access to the buildings.

"Parking for non-Metro passengers will cost Dh10 per hour and Dh50 for the whole day. Each building will provide space for 3,000 cars."

The RTA plans to introduce feeder bus routes to link up with Metro stations and integrate various modes of transport. Commuters using Nol cards will be able to pay for a single journey and travel on different forms of transport by following the RTA's transfer rules.

The total time allowed for a journey of 3km or less will be 90 minutes, while the maximum time for a longer trip will be three hours. Only one transfer will be allowed on a short trip, while three will be allowed for longer distances. Fares will be the same on weekdays, weekends and holidays.

It will be possible to make multiple trips and pay only a single fare. However, transfers between two different modes of transport will have to be made within 30 minutes of each leg and a maximum of three transfers will be allowed per journey.

For example a user who wants to travel on Dubai Metro and then take a bus to reach will have 30 minutes to board the bus after leaving the train.
