Infrastructural projects worth Dh1.25 billion have been sanctioned by the Ajman Municipality and Planning Department, targeted mainly towards improving the emirate's roads, said a top official of the civic body yesterday.

Mohammed bin Omair, Director of Planning and Survey at the department, told Emirates Business that 37 per cent of the 2010 budget has been allocated for roads and bridges, which reflected the importance the department attaches to upgrading and re-planning the emirate's transport network.

Last year, the municipality finished work on main and branch road projects worth Dh143 million. The value of projects executed so far this year is about Dh300m, he said, adding that projects currently under execution include main and branch roads in the Al Hamidiya area and re-planning of the Al Nakheel heritage and tourist area.

Mohammed Ahmad Al Awadhi, Director of the department's Roads and Infrastructure Division, said preparatory work has begun on branch road projects in residential areas such as Al Zahra, Al Jurf and Mushairef.

The municipality has also finished 99 per cent of the preparatory work in one of the most important projects for developing the Sheikh Maktoum bin Rashid Al Maktoum Road, he added. The value of the project is Dh154m and the duration of work is 18 months.

"Two five-lanes bridges will be constructed at two intersections on the road, one intersecting with Amr bin Al Aas Street and the other with Omar bin Abdul Aziz Street. The project also includes expanding the 4.4km road into three lanes and it will help ensure non-stop traffic flow from Ajman's centre towards Emirates Road. A rain water drainage network is also part of the project," Al Awadhi said.

The municipality has finished 53 per cent of the work on service roads with parking facilities on Sheikh Maktoum Street at a cost of Dh9m. It covers the area from Al Maktoum Bridge to Al Zahra Bridge and the entire project is expected to be finished in the third quarter of this year.

Another road project worth Dh 41.803m, including pavements and light fixtures in Ajman's industrial area has been completed, he said. Also ready is a rainwater drainage network in the new industrial area, which cost Dh35m. Al Awadhi said roads in the Al Nakheel area were also being developed.
