Prices of steel materials and readymix surge

The average prices of building materials for March undertaken by the Statistics Centre of Abu Dhabi (Scad) revealed that prices of 10-25 mm steel bars from Qatar rose by 39.1 per cent to Dh2,800 against Dh2,012.5 in February.

However, prices for UAE and Turkish steel bars increased by 10.5 and 10.6 per cent to Dh2,218.8 and Dh2,212.5 respectively last month, against Dh2,007.5 and Dh2001.3 in February.

Again, wire binding (10kg bundle) showed a dramatic 35.4 per cent rise to reach Dh41.9 in March against Dh30.9 in February.

High tensile steel (UAE) jumped by 6.3 per cent to Dh81.4 a tonne against Dh80.3 in February followed by Turkey showing a 5.5 per cent increase to Dh2,150 against Dh2,037.1 in February. Steel beams (big) from Japan also climbed by 5.6 per cent to Dh2,933.3 per tonne in March against Dh2,800 in the previous month.

However, small steel beams from Korea showed a 8.6 per cent drop to Dh2,866.7 last month against Dh3,137.5 per tonne in February.

Prices of normal readymix rose by 13 per cent to Dh305 per cubic metre against Dh270 in February, while sulphate resistance concrete readymix surged by 12.7 percent to Dh310 per cubic metre in March from Dh275 in February.

The prices of aggregates and sand remained stable.

Cement prices stayed stable except for sulphate resistant (Al Etihad), which dropped by 1.3 per cent to Dh287.5 and Portland cement, which showed a fractional drop to Dh277.5 per tonne in March.

Prices of all tiles for most floor and wall remained fairly stable. But prices for 60x30 cm/m2 granite Labrador tiles from Italy showed a 15.1 per cent drop to Dh425 in March from Dh500 in February. But ceramic tiles from Italy and Ras Al Khaimah showed a favourable rise of 13.4 per cent and 12 per cent respectively in March. Porcelain white tiles showed a 18.3 per cent rise to Dh55 in March from Dh46.5 in February.

Red timber sheets (Keruin) from Malaysia registered a 8.9 per cent rise from Dh75 per sheet in February to Dh81.7 in March.

White wood prices however showed a marginal drop in March. Bathroom set, natural stone, sinks, tanks, paints, glass, PVC pipes and electrical wire prices remained stable, according to the Scad report.
