GM recalls 22,472 vehicles in Middle East

General Motors has recalled 22,472 vehicles in the Middle East as part of its worldwide recall of 1.5 million vehicles.

Speaking to Emirates Business, GM's Middle East spokesperson said: "We have recalled 22,472 vehicles in the Middle East. Of this, 6,126 vehicles are from the UAE." The company has recalled models like Cadillac, Hummer, Chevrolet Avalanche, Silverado, Suburban, Tahoe, and Chevrolet Traverse, among others.

The vehicles were recalled in the region late on Tuesday soon after the global recall was announced. The worldwide recall followed the detection of a problem in the windshield wiper fluid heating system that, the company said, might cause a fire.

Around 17 models from 2006 to 2009 are impacted by the recall. GM said earlier its technicians would remove the heater and redirect the fluid system. "Owners of recalled vehicles would receive $100 (Dh367) to compensate them as the feature would be disabled," the Middle East spokesperson said. According to the GM statement: "There are 98,794 affected vehicles in Canada; 26,228 in Mexico and 38,093 exports."

The heated washer fluid system was recalled in August 2008 because a short circuit on the printed circuit board could overheat the control circuit ground wire. Dealers at the time installed an in-line fuse in the heated washer module wiring. Now, service personnel will remove the heater washer fluid module and reroute washer fluid hoses. "This was a unique technology available from only one supplier and that supplier has stopped manufacturing, which left no opportunity to collaborate on an improved design," Jeff Boyer, GM's executive director was quoted as saying by international media.
