Industry veteran Steve Smith has taken over as chief operating officer of Arabian Radio Network (ARN). This was announced by Abdullatif Al Sayegh, chief executive officer of Arab Media Group (AMG), the largest media organisation in the UAE.

In his new role, Smith is mandated to continue the growth of the network, develop programming and revenue for ARN’s existing nine stations, and chart a course for further expansion.

Speaking to Emirates Business, Al Sayegh conveyed his confidence in Smith and said “Smith brings with him the international expertise and experience that’s essential for taking the broadcasting industry to the next level in the region”.

Hinting at the shape of things to come in the near future, he added: “Dubai is growing rapidly and we want to offer sections of new Dubai its own network of dedicated radio stations. This will help radio grow beyond just a musical companion in your house or in your car. The reach of radio is going to increase and enhance in the near future and ARN will set new standards in the industry.”

Al Sayegh confirmed his faith in the management of ARN. “Mahmoud Al Rasheed [ARN General Manager] is very efficient in managing affairs and Chetan Fernandes [Head of Creative] will play an essential part in maintaining high levels of creativity. He’s a very creative person and we are certain that what he has done with the Asian channels will be spread over to other channels also.”

Smith’s extensive senior management experience in the Australian radio and entertainment industry spans more than 15 years, including five years as general manager of the Melbourne-based Australian Radio Network, where he achieved record ratings and revenue results.

General Manager Al Rasheed said Smith’s appointment is strategically timed to capitalise on the remarkable growth trajectory shown by ARN. He said: “Over the past year, we successfully launched two stations – Virgin Dubai and Pulse 95.3. With more than 50 per cent of the region’s population in the youth category and a unique multi-ethnic demography, we believe there exists tremendous market potential for diverse premium content.

“Smith brings with him his rich experience in a mature market such as Australia. His business acumen and keen understanding of the demands of varying target audiences make him the right choice to help ARN set the pace for FM radio both regionally and internationally.”

Smith said: “It is a privilege to be part of a fast expanding entity such as ARN, which boasts some of the region’s most popular radio stations in one of the world’s most dynamic media markets. AMG has shown a firm determination to set best practices in Middle East broadcasting. And when this opportunity came my way I was immediately attracted by the group’s commitment and passion for raising the standards of entertainment across the region.”

“Summer is the best time for new appointments as it gives people time to settle and understand the market and be fully operational and productive during the peak season,” said Al Sayegh about the timing of the appointment. “And once he starts here in the summer, he will surely enjoy the remaining part of the year – weatherwise and workwise,” concluded Al Sayegh on a humorous note.

AMG is a diversified media entity comprising radio, newspaper, television, online, outdoor and events companies.
