Discovery Gardens in the dark: Residents afraid to step out

The buildings are well lit, but once you step out of the building the common area is dark. It is next to impossible to see who is sitting on benches, says a resident (SUPPLIED)

“The open space in our cluster is so dimly lit and I fear it will lead to an untoward incident,” says Priya L, who stays in Mediterranean cluster in Discovery Gardens.

“We can’t let our kids play alone in the evening as the common area is dimly lit. It’s not bright at all and one can’t see who is sitting on the benches in the common area. We see different people every day and it is difficult to ascertain whether they are residents or not.”

Priya’s concern is being addressed by Nakheel, the master developer of the community.

A spokesperson told Emirates24|7: "We are continuously evaluating the security requirements in communities such as Discovery Gardens and The Gardens.”

He added that they were also studying the lighting coverage in common areas in Discovery Gardens as part of their plan to enhance it for the safety and security of the residents.

Each cluster, comprising three buildings, has an open common area and the lighting in this area is the main concern.

Susan Lobo reiterates that the buildings are well lit in Discovery Gardens, but the common areas, except for Zen cluster, are dimly lit.

In January, Nakheel issued a tender seeking supply, installation, programming and maintenance of card reading access control system and CCTV system at Discovery Gardens.

Apartment owners say they haven’t heard from Nakheel or the Owners' Association on when the access cards would be issued or CCTV system would be installed.

Discovery Gardens consists of six themed communities inspired by garden living, and includes Zen, Mediterranean, Contemporary, Mogul, Mesoamerican and Cactus courtyard gardens. The development spans over 26 million square foot plot and has 291 buildings.
