Nineteen organisations from a wide range of sectors yesterday received the Dubai Quality Award (DQA) from His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. In addition five organisations were honoured with the Dubai Human Development Award (DHDA) and the Dubai Human Development Appreciation Programme for their commitment to empowering nationals in the workplace.

Also presenting awards at the ceremony was Dubai Deputy Ruler Sheikh Maktoum bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, who honoured companies winning the DHDA Awards.

The winners in the 2008 cycle were honoured at a ceremony at the Grand Hyatt in two categories – the Dubai Quality Award and the Dubai Quality Appreciation Programme (DQAP). A special certificate for achieving excellence in the leadership criteria was also presented.

Sheikh Mohammed congratulated the winners and called on all companies to focus on quality and excellence, as they form the base of development and competition in the private sector. He went on describe how success and prosperity could be achieved through public-private partnerships in all sectors.

Sharjah Islamic Bank (finance), Abu Dhabi Gas Liquefaction Company (manufacturing), Dubai Properties (real estate) and Dubai Healthcare City were the winners of the Dubai Quality Award. FedEx Express International (Dubai branch) received the special certificate for achieving excellence in the leadership criteria.

The winners of the Dubai Quality Appreciation Programme were Associated Constructions and Investments and Amana Steel Buildings Contracting (construction); Damas and Joy Alukkas Jewellery (trade); Jumeirah Bab Al Shams Desert Resort and Spa, India Club and Al Jawhara Gardens Hotel (tourism); Otis, Emirates Marketing and Promotion and 3i Infotech Limited (services); Zulekha Hospital (healthcare); National Fire Fighting Manufacturing (manufacturing); the Kanoo Group-Power and Industrial Projects Division (professional) and Al Rostamani International Exchange (finance).

The winners in the 2008 cycle of the Dubai Human Development Award were honoured in two categories – The Dubai Human Development Award and the Dubai Human Development Appreciation Programme.

The Dubai Human Development Award category was presented to DP World and the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (services), while Mawarid Finance and UAE Exchange (finance) and Dubai Properties Group (real estate) were awarded under the Dubai Human Development Appreciation Programme for their contribution to National human development in their firms.

"Dubai is committed to strengthening the culture of quality and excellence in performance and developing the means and policies to achieve this," said Sami Daen Al Qamzi, Director-General of the Department of Economic Development.

"This calls for enabling companies in the emirate to align their performance and services in line with international quality standards. Commitment to applying international quality standards is a must to preserve the accomplishments of Dubai across all sectors. These achievements are our pride and glory. Through the Dubai Quality Award, the concept of quality becomes an incentive for continuous development."

Each submission for the DQA is reviewed by assessors according to procedures laid down by the Business Excellence Centre at DED that are modelled on the European Foundation for Quality Management (EFQM) excellence. After the entries are reviewed a panel of jury members interviews the teams that assess the applicant companies to select potential winners. The DHDA covers eight economic sectors – trade, construction, professional, services, tourism, finance, manufacturing and government.

Hamdi Osman, Senior Vice-President for Europe, Middle East, the Indian Subcontinent and Africa at FedEx, said the awards motivated corporations operating in the emirates, both winners and non-winners.
