An Emirati customs inspector abducted a female transit passenger and tried to rape her, Dubai Criminal Court heard yesterday.

AT, 20, tricked the woman into believing that Dubai International Airport was offering hotel rooms to passengers. He took her by taxi to Al Nakheel hotel apartments where he tried to rape her, but the alleged victim resisted and called the hotel staff for help.

The defendant denied the charge and said he had been unable to return to work because of the case. He has been released but his passport has been withheld. The trial was adjourned until March 4. The defence lawyer said he wanted to hear the testimony of prosecution witnesses Tholfaqar Ahmed, a hotel receptionist, and Sergeant Ahmed Hussein of Dubai Police.

Hussein had said in his testimony he was assigned to search for the defendant who was arrested. When the defendant was interrogated about the incident, he denied it at first before later admitting to raping the victim. The prosecution was asked to instruct witnesses to attend the next session.
