'Pardoned' convict seeks cut in life sentence

A Saudi national, who had received a life term for murdering a compatriot, has approached the Appeals Court to reduce his sentence. A verdict on the appeal is expected on July 27.

AM, 21, was convicted of killing another Saudi national at the Naif area of Dubai in 2006.

The life sentence was issued by the Court of First Instance on charges of premeditated murder, and upheld by the Appeals Court.

Under the influence of alcohol and drugs, AM had got into the car of the victim, ZA, and his brother without their permission when they stopped at the traffic light.

He asked them to take him to Burj Al Arab, threatening them with a pistol he was carrying.

Since they refused, AM shot and killed ZA, who was driving the car, and injured the other.

However, parents of AM paid Dh2 million as blood money to the victim’s family, which in turn made a concession in the case.

Following this, the convict moved the Court of First Instance seeking reduction in the life term to three years’ imprisonment. The court turned down the request.

He then appealed the sentence. Defence lawyer Mohammed Abdul Reda asked the court to reduce the term as the parents of the victim had pardoned the victim and the blood money had been paid.

The Appeals Court will issue its verdict on July 27.
