Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) said the construction work on parallel roads and Rashid Hospital tunnels projects is progressing well with nearly 60 per cent already complete.

Mattar Al Tayer, Chairman of the Board and Executive Director of RTA, yesterday inspected the progress on both projects.

Completion rate has exceeded 60 per cent in Phase III B of Parallel Roads Improvement Project, and hit almost 40 per cent in Phase III A of the same project. More than half of the work on Phase II C of the project is already complete. Work on the Rashid Hospital Tunnels Project is 30 per cent complete, said a statement.

The Parallel Roads Project is one of RTA's major road projects. The corridor starts from Sheikh Rashid Road in the north and ends at the outskirts of Abu Dhabi emirate to the south. It includes bridges and intersections with perpendicular roads.

In a gathering with the directors of contractor and consultant companies overseeing the project, Al Tayer stressed the importance of complying with the approved time schedule, considering the importance of the project. He also directed them to adopt the highest international standards in the field of occupational safety to protect the lives of workers and engineers.

Phase III B extends from the northern side of Street 116 to Interchange Five on Sheikh Zayed Road. The road corridor passes across many key property hubs such as Emirates Hills, the Springs and the Meadows. The three-lane road in each direction extends 20km and forms 14 per cent of the total works of the project.

Phase III A is located around the Jumeirah Lakes Towers area and links developments such as Nakheel and Emaar. It is located on the south of Sheikh Zayed Road between Interchange 5 and 5.5. The project, undertaken by the Italian Todini Company, includes construction of a three-lane road in each direction extending 10km, in addition to seven bridges and a tunnel. This phase accounts for six per cent of the total project.

Phase II C of the project is undertaken by Salini Company and covers construction of two bridges with two lanes in each direction extending 2.4km. The project serves traffic inbound from Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Road at Lamcy Plaza and outbound to Road 312 to the front of Dubai World Trade Centre. It also serves the traffic in the opposite direction of Road 312 to Al Maktoum and Al Garhoud bridges as well as Dubai-Al Ain Road.

The Rashid Hospital Tunnels Project is undertaken by Wade Adams Company and includes the construction of roads and two tunnels of two lanes each extending 900 metres to serve the traffic coming from Tariq bin Ziyad and Umm Harir roads towards the intersection of Al Riyadh Road and the extension of the Floating Bridge Road. The first tunnel passes from Tariq bin Ziyad Road underneath Al Maktoum Bridge. The second one inbound from Umm Harir Road crosses Oud Metha Park.
