UAE cabinet okays body on human rights

His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, chaired a cabinet meeting at the Presidential Palace in Abu Dhabi yesterday.

The meeting was attended by Lt General Sheikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, and Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Presidential Affairs.

The meeting began with the cabinet approving the Federal National Council's request to discuss issues pertaining to water resources and environmental problems. An agreement between the UAE and Portugal on visa exemptions for holders of diplomatic passports and an agreement with Syria on air transport services were approved.

After deciding to prepare a draft law amending some provisions of Federal Law No 15 of 2005 regulating camel-racing, the cabinet passed a motion to restructure the General Authority for Pensions and Social Security's board of directors, under the chairmanship of the Minister of Finance.

The cabinet also agreed to form a permanent committee to follow up on the Universal Periodic Review on human rights. The new body will be attached to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and will consist of officials from various ministries and government institutions. The Emirates Authority for Standardisation and Metrology's 2010 budget and final accounts for other entities, including Empost, were also approved.
