Work on seven new public parks has been completed by Dubai Municipality, Director-General Hussain Nasser Lootah announced yesterday.

"They include residential parks at Al Qusais 2, Abu Hail and Garhoud 2, a Hill Park at Hatta and three pond parks at Al Quoz 2, Al Qusais 3 and Al Nahda," he said. "The planning standards require Dubai to work towards making eight per cent of the city green.

"The implementation of these projects is part of the municipality's efforts aimed at improving public services and utilities and providing residential areas with parks.

"The design of the parks is in line with planning standards based on earlier studies designed to determine the requirements of the districts and meet the recreational and leisure needs of the population."

Lootah said the Al Qusais 2 park cost Dh7.8 million to build and contained two play areas for children aged between two and 12, sports fields for volleyball, basketball, tennis, shaded seating areas and a jogging track.

There were also wooden umbrellas, plants and seasonal flowers, trees, bushes and service buildings such as a cafeteria, a store and toilets.

The Abu Hail park at Hor Al Anz East cost Dh7.9m. The Dh6.7m Garhoud 3 park is divided into two parts by a corridor in the middle. The project includes a hill park, central plaza, barbecue area, courts for handball, volleyball and basketball, a jogging and walking track and a children's play area.

Lootah said pond parks would provide a natural outlet for all sections of the community and a safe place for children to take part in many activities. The Dh26m Al Qusais 3 park covers a 17-hectare site and the needs of people with special needs have been taken into account by the designers. There are two play areas for children of between two and five and between six and 12, and separate sports venues have been provided for adults.

The Al Quoz 2 park cost Dh20m and has a pond measuring 5.27 hectares and 5.5 hectares of parkland.

"The park has a main area with seats shaded by trees and walkways with wooden shaded seats and seasonal flowers on both sides," added Lootah.

The pond at the Dh20.8m Al Nahda 2 park measures 5.14 hectares and the parkland extends 5.6 hectares. It has soccer fields, basketball and volleyball courts, two tennis courts, a 1.35km jogging track, a 1.4km bicycle track and an elevated picnic area for families overlooking the pond.
