Tremors from last night’s earthquake in Southern Iran were felt in the UAE, with residents taking to microblogging site, Twitter, minutes later in confusion and to narrate their harrowing experience.

The 5.8 magnitude quake, which hit at 11.08pm, shocked Ajman resident Omar K. who tweeting repeatedly: “It was an earthquake?!”

A senior met department official said that the UAE did not have any major impact following the eathquake in Iran.

"There have been no reports of any damage so far," the official said.

However, according to him tremors could well have been felt in some parts of the country.

A resident of Al Nahda tweeted: “On the 11th floor. I thought I was fainting, but then realised that my lampshade and the rest were swaying and clattering too…”

By the time the second quake hit 12 minutes later, measuring 5.1 on the richter scale, several ‘tweeple’ were requesting UAE denizens to stay calm, call for help if they were injured and not create widespread panic.

The incident was especially harrowing for several Sharjah residents, many of whom were still in the dark after yesterday’s power cuts and took to the streets in confusion.

Meanwhile, some parts of Dubai also seemed to have felt the tremors. One resident of JLT, Jogiraj Sikidar, said, “I felt the tremor clearly at around midnight. It was slight, but I felt it.”

The earthquake is southern Iran injuring 15 people there and damaged residential buildings in four villages near the town of Lamerd, state media reported.
