Best and worst from Hollywood's biggest night

It was no surprise that the Oscars was a sparkling event. Sparkles are everywhere this season and a lot of stars were channelling the trend. Some stars such as Sandra Bullock went all out, while others including Zoe Saldana hinted at it.

The other big trend of the season is nude and I was surprised not too many stars tackled it. Perhaps with someone like Demi Moore pulling it off with such panache, the younger stars are probably glad they didn't try it.

My big disappointments of the night were Georgina Chapman and Carey Mulligan, not because they were badly dressed, they both looked good, but both women are capable of much, much more. Particularly in Mulligan's case, I had expected to be wowed by her but she choose boring black.

I love blue and I was pleased to see it so prominent on the red carpet.

Cameron Diaz in Oscar de la Renta. She exudes old Hollywood glamour and is accessorised to perfection.

Vera Farmiga in Marchesa. Normally I'm a fan of pink but not when it looks like this with ruffles, less is more.

Rachel Mc Adams in Ellie Saab Couture was a breath of fresh air. Saab is now the "go to man" for the Oscars.

Jane Seymour in David Meister. How many events do you have to be at to know colours that clash with the red carpet?

Sarah Jessica Parker in Chanel Couture. The detail is on the back and top marks to SJP for trying something different.

Charlize Theron in Dior. Why did Dior ruin the dress by putting two flowers on the chest? It looks ridiculous.

Helen Mirren in Badgley Mischka. She is one woman who knows how to dress for her age.

Zoe Saldana has spent the past few weeks gathering froth from Starbucks for her Givenchy gown.

Demi Moore in Atelier Verscace. Nude is an incredibly difficult colour to wear but she manages to pull it off.

Tina Fey in Michael Kors. She got a lot of stick for her Golden Globes dress but this is not an Oscars dress.
