Time spent in Bollywood is teaching Sonam Kapoor a thing or two about diplomacy these days.

The young actress, known for her headstrong ways and politically incorrect statements in the media, has apologised to Indian author and columnist Shobha Dé.

However, we are still unsure if it’s for publicly supporting a rude statement made by Punit Malhotra, her rumoured boyfriend and director of her latest film I Hate Luv Storys, or for calling Dé a 60-something “porn writer” last year.

Anyways, Kapoor took to microblogging site, Twitter, and formally apologised to Dé, tweeting: “Mrs de I owe you an apology for getting personal. I’m ashamed for my momentary lapse in judgement. And apologetic. Every writer and journalist and audience are entitled to their opinion and I respect that.”

The epiphany came to the actress after she reposted Malhotra’s tweet, who was upset by Dé’s review of his movie. He wrote: “Shobhaa De is a fossil going through menopause… Going by her logic, should I be spanking Shobhaa if I don’t like what she writes?”

Soon after, Kapoor deleted the tweet from her timeline and posted the apology instead.

The fast turnaround is surprising considering it was just last month when Kapoor told Emirates Business that she still wanted nothing to do “with that woman”.

“I don’t know her, and don’t ever care to know her either. I refuse to give such a woman any importance, even if it is negative publicity,” said Kapoor.

The controversy stirred up last year when Dé ridiculed Kapoor, along with fellow actors Imran Khan and Deepika Padukone on her blog, referring to them as a talentless lot of new actors.

At the time, Kapoor told us: “I called her a 60-something porn writer and stand by my words.

“It was all very silly. I was at the Filmfare [Indian magazine] photoshoot and my journalist friend tells me that Shobha has slagged off us newcomers, including Imran and Deepika.

“That woman never has anything nice to say about anyone. And if you have such strong opinions then you should be open to criticism.”

Kapoor is now busy promoting her new film Aisha, an adaptation of Jane Austen’s book, Emma. The movie, which has been produced by her father, Slumdog Millionaire star Anil Kapoor, will see the actress star opposite actor Abhay Deol and is scheduled to release in the UAE on August 5.
