Residents of Dubai are invited to put on their walking shoes and join millions of people around the globe to "Walk the World" on the weekend to fight hunger.

Each year, the United Nations' World Food Programme's Walk the World fundraising initiative sees people across the globe walk to raise money for hungry schoolchildren.

This year, Dubai has joined the initiative and the WFP and the International Humanitarian City (IHC) are urging people in the UAE to join people from countries around the world (one hour in each of the planet's time zones) to raise awareness and funds to feed poverty-stricken children.

Talking to Emirates Business, Abeer Etefa, spokesperson, WFP, Regional Bureau for Middle East, Central Asia and Eastern Europe, said: "Each year the WFP feeds millions of men, women and children in poverty and calamity-stricken communities across the world and this year we aim to feed about 100 million people in 80 countries.

"Money raised from the event will benefit WFP projects worldwide mainly school feeding in different parts of the world. Often this food that the children get at school is the only meal that they will get throughout the day. So I urge the people of Dubai to go to the Dubai Mall on June 4 and join the walk against hunger. They can either bring corporate sponsorship or donate on the site or even donate online if they want to."

The Walk the World Dubai 2010 will be held on Friday at 10am and registration desks will be in the Star Atrium, lower ground floor, from 8.30am.
