Dubai is still the best place in the GCC when it comes to quality of living, according to a new survey.

The city retained its top slot in Mercer's '2010 Quality of Living worldwide city rankings', released yesterday.

Dubai was followed by Abu Dhabi in the GCC rankings. Vienna topped the list, while Baghdad was in the last place. Muscat was ranked 100, followed by Doha (110), Manama (111), Kuwait City (122) and Riyadh (158).

In Middle East and African subcontinent, Dubai remained ahead of cities like Mauritius and Cape Town in terms of quality of living.

Mercer's head of survey practice across Middle East, Bassam Gazal said: "Abu Dhabi and Dubai governments have invested a lot of time and money to improve the quality of living in both cities and it's only natural they harvest the fruits of hard work."

Mercer's list now covers 221 cities and is conducted to help governments and multinational firms compensate employees fairly while placing them on international assignments. The rankings are based on a point-scoring index, which sees cities ranked against New York as the base city with a score of 100.
