Bollywood heartthrob Imran Khan speeds off to Phuket for a quickie honeymoon with fiancée Avantika Malik today, a day after their registry wedding in Mumbai on Monday.

But in what is emerging as one of the key celebrity trends of this century, the pair aren’t heading out alone: according to media reports, they will be accompanied by 50 of their closest friends and family members.

Among them are Imran's grandmother Zeenat, uncle Mansoor Khan and a battery of assorted aunts. And the honeymoon resort, a luxury island hotel in Phuket, was apparently the bride’s choice.

Has marriage changed him, then?

"I'm not feeling married right now, it will take some time to sink in. I'm very happy" Imran told reporters after the ceremony on Monday.

Asked how he felt after breaking the hearts of his female fans, the 27-year-old said: "I've been in a relationship for the past eight years so the point of breaking hearts doesn't arise. Everyone always knew that I'm dating and was never single, so getting married is nothing new."

The details

The pair reportedly tied the knot at a registered wedding at superstar uncle Aamir Khan’s bungalow on Pali Hill, in Mumbai’s Bandra suburb.

Among those who attended were Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan and his wife Kiran Rao, as well as his ex-wife Reena and his two children Junaid and Ira and Mansoor Khan and wife Tina.

The couple then hosted a quiet dinner for close family and friends at the nearby five-star Taj Lands End Hotel.

A reception at Imran’s house followed, with the couple arriving in a black Porsche decorated with white "Just Married" flags.

Both wore beautiful traditional wedding costumes - Avantika was wearing a light grey lehenga choli with a red border and gold work, while Imran was dressed in a black bandhgala. Both outfits were designed by Manish Malhotra. Other wedding outfits have been designed by Shantanu and Nikhil Mehra.

This message from Uncle Aamir...

"We are very happy for both of them and all our blessing are with them. I hope they have a happy married life and have lots of kids," said a visibly elated Aamir.

The actor plans to host a lavish reception for the couple once they return from their honeymoon. He told reporters a date had not been fixed, but that it was scheduled for the end of this month.

Aamir and Kiran will not make the trip to Thailand as they ready to promote their film “Dhobi Ghat”, which hits cinemas on January 21.

Who’s Avantika anyway?

The 28-year-old is the daughter of Indian television queen Vandana Malik, who heads up CNBC’s India business, CNBC-TV18. A student of Bombay Scottish School and St Xavier's College in Mumbai, she reportedly met Imran in the United States, where she was pursuing a higher degree.

The pair have been dating each other for eight years – long before Imran became famous.

They were engaged on January 16 last year before finally deciding to tie the knot.
