Music and dance are a very intrinsic part of Bollywood.

Even though item numbers with skimpily dressed girls existed in the 1970s and 80s, these days a spiced-up item number has become a guaranteed ingredient to make a film a super hit.

Top actresses performing to item numbers have become common today.

Gone are the days when the industry had specific extras for item dance.

Gone are the days when actresses considered shaking booty to be out of their league.

Now actresses who are gunning for the numero uno spot are more than willing to grab an overtly raunchy dance.

Actresses like Helen, Aruna Irani, Padma and Bindu were stalwarts of this league.

Eventually main stream cinema actresses also joined in. Zeenat Aman and Parveen Babi were one of the earliest known heroines to perform sassy numbers. Now every Bollywood actress wants to be an item girl.

Katrina Kaif

The petite, prim and proper Katrina Kaif was overnight transformed into a seductive and alluring top item girl. The eternally beautiful and sexy Katrina gyrated and mesmerised her fans with ‘Shiela ki Jawani’ from the film 'Tees Maar Khan'. Director and choreographer Farah Khan put Katrina on a strict diet regime to look her best in the item song. Even Katrina agreed that this was one of her raunchiest performances. Katrina was recently seen in a naughty item number in 'Agneepath'. The song was totally in sync with Bollywood's of-late slant on flippant lyrics and 'Chikni Chameli' became a national rage.

Maliaka Arora Khan:

Maliaka Arora Khan's dance "Chaiya Chaiya" from the movie 'Dil Se' can be counted as the mother of modern item numbers in Bollywood. Maliaka then came up with "Maahi Ve" from 'Kante' which literally brought the typical pole dancing and strip clubs to the Indian cinema. Malaika sizzled with the popular item song 'Munni Badnaam Hui' in Salman Khan's 'Dabangg'. This sultry 37 year old model turned actress has always managed to turn heads with performances in films like 'Kaal', 'Welcome' and 'Hey Baby'. With a curvy hour-glass figure to die for Malaika is always on the top of the item charts.

Mallika Sherawat:

The seductive number "Maiya Maiya" from the movie "Guru" where Mallika Sherawat dressed very provacatively and using few seductive signs saw her climbing the chart as one of the top item girls in the industry. The 'Murder', girl dazzled on screen last year with several item numbers, making her the most in demand item girl. Mallika became obvious choice for item songs when she did 'Razia' (Thank You). In 2011 alone Mallika was chosen for 'Shalu Ke Thumkey' (Bin Bulaye Baraati); 'Jalebi Bai' (Double Dhamaal); 'Kalasala' (Oshti-Tamil). In 2012, besides the number in 'Tezz'; Sonu Sood requested Mallika to shake a leg with him in 'Maximum'.

Kareena Kapoor:

Top notch actress Kareena Kapoor has quite a few item numbers to her credit including the one in 'Don' where she stepped into Helen's shoes with the 'Yeh Mera Dil' number. She was later seen gyrating to Akon's song "Chammak Challo" from the movie 'RA.One'. She then wooed hers fans with 'Dil Mera Muft Ka' for boyfriend Saif Ali Khan's home production 'Agent Vinod'. Now Kareena is all set to shake her leg in two item songs in Madhur Bhandarkar’s 'Heroine'. One of Kareena's item numbers is called "Halkat jawani". The latest buzz doing the rounds in B-town is that gorgeous actress is likely to be seen in an item number in Salman Khan's 'Dabangg 2'.

Gauhar Khan:

Gauhar Khan is known for her sensuous item number 'Parda Parda' in the film 'Once upon a Time in Mumbai'. The song was a remixed version from the Rajesh Khanna starrer 'Apna Desh'. The track sung by Sunidhi Chauhan was one of the biggest USPs of the film. Gauhar is a vibrant dancer and has proved her mettle in an item number from the film 'Aan-Men at Work' in 2004. Gauhar created a scintillating effect in the item song ‘Chokra Jawaan’ from 'Ishaqzaade' as village belle.
