While reel-life turns into a competitive power play with each corresponding film promising even bigger production budgets, more exotic locales and bolder scenes, then is it any wonder that real-life imitates the celeb glamour quotient for the superstars of Indian cinema?

Here nothing is done without finesse; and in Bollywood circles, that simply equates to higher the stardom then bigger the style statement, even when it comes to showering very expensive gifts on those they deeply care about.

In the last week alone, two major players in the film industry have allegedly dug deep into their pockets to gift their ladyloves a shiny new car to boldly display their affections for the world to see, with Aditya Chopra and Rani Mukherjee being the latest power couple in the spotlight.

While confession is usually never the name of the game in Bollywood, insiders are adamant that heir to the Chopra production house empire snapped up a spanking new Audi A8 for Mukherjee, costing him a cool Rs12.5 million for his trouble.

The story goes that Chopra drove up to his beau’s home to take her out for a spin and then left the keys in the palm of her hand while he jetted off with a beatific smile on his face.

Of course, Chopra’s grand gesture is not the first and certainly won’t be the last, as Bollywood continues its obsession with expensive tokens of love to cruise for the cameras. Here are some other names that have shifted into top drive to do the very same in the recent past.

Salman Khan gifts Katrina Kaif an Audi Q7

Katrina Kaif may deny it until she’s blue in the face, just like her spokesperson, yet those close to her inner circle stand by their word that last week’s birthday gift to the actress was a stylish SUV by her one-time alleged boyfriend and close friend, Salman Khan.

In fact, on the birthday itself, Kaif drove up to the actor’s home in the wee hours in her spanking new Audi Q7 and spent the evening celebrating with Khan’s family.

Doesn’t that paint a pretty family picture, we must say.

However, as stories soon reached fever pitch when Kaif was spotted getting to the Q7 at Rajesh Khanna’s funeral, that the actress finally had her spokesperson release a statement to the media, saying that the actress purchased the car back in May but was unable to use it as she had to fly to London to shoot for Yash Chopra’s film with Shah Rukh Khan.

“The car was parked outside her Bandra residence and was used only after she returned to India. Katrina has bought the car from her own money. It’s not gifted to her by Salman or anyone else,” said her spokesperson.

Who knows what the truth here is, or do we?

Back in April, the Bollywood rumour mill was abuzz when the large-hearted Salman Khan decided to show his gratitude towards Kareena Kapoor in style for agreeing to do an item song in the upcoming “Dabangg 2” without charging a pretty penny for it.

The style quotient came with the gesture to shower Kapoor with a cool new BMW to add to her collection.

The buzz went into overdrive when UTV Motion Pictures’ senior manager, Prithwish Ganguly tweeted: “Salman Khan to gift Kareena Kapoor a BMW for being a part of Dabangg 2.”

It doesn’t get more obvious than this.

Shah Rukh Khan gifts Sanjay Dutt a bike

Clearly, Salman Khan has taken inspiration from arch rival and enemy number one, Shah Rukh Khan, who has a history of showering expensive gifts on those who impress him.

Back during the days of ‘Ra.One’, Shah Rukh approached Sanjay Dutt to perform a cameo in his sci-fi film, which the latter actor readily agreed to without wanting a penny for his efforts.

So touched was Shah Rukh, that he snapped up a cruiser bike for Rs1.5m that Dutt had been eyeing for quite a while.

An insider was quoted at the time saying: “Dutt had been enquiring about a particular Italian model, so SRK arranged for the custom-made bike to be imported direct from Italy.”

It’s well known that Amitabh Bachchan had bought a Rs17m worth Bentley for son Abhishek on his birthday back in 2007.

So filmmaker Vidhu Vinod Chopra decided to take a page out of the same diary and gift Amitabh a sleek, silver Rolls Royce Phantom because he was “really happy with his performance in ‘Eklavya’.”
