Bollywood 2014: Top 5 dialogues that won the applause

Bollywood kitsch is as much about its dialogues as it's about its pulsating song and dance. Often, the stories and performances are forgotten, but the lines aren't, inevitably taking on a life of their own. Whether it's Sashi Kapoor's "Mere pass ma hain" or Salman Khan’s "Ek baar jo maine commitment kar di… To main apne aap ki bhi nahin suntan", there’s a line that fits many moods and emotions.

Although this year didn't see many cracking lines, we've collected our toppers for 2014.

1.Filmistaan

"Yeh to mannogay ki Sachin Tendulkar best batsman hai? Shahid Afridi best batsman hain. Bhaisaab kuch zayada nahi ho gaya? Matlab kuch bhi?"

Despite being taken hostage by Pakistani fundamentalists, the Indian doesn't stop from backing its cricketing legend, even if at the cost of putting out the other side. Numerous filmmakers have fed off the hatred between the neigbhouring nations with gusto, but none so genuinely insightful like Nitin Kakkar’s intensely layered screenplay. He illustrates how hatred between the two nations vanishes instantly over Salman Khan’s mushy affairs or Sunny Deol's raging macho exploits, but re-emerges when they are pitted against each other on the cricketing field.

2. Queen

"Indians sab cheez main best hai, kissing main bhi indian hi best hai. kabhi Emraam Hashmi ka naam nai suna? Uski sab filmo main dekho, kissing best hai"

Vikas Bhal's naïve Rani, who is forced to embark on her honeymoon on her own, is hit with strange situations and stranger people. She tackles each hurdle delightfully with her innocence and charm. This particular line, we hear, was written by the actress, making it extra special.

3. PK

"Wo jaisedeewar pe Bhagwan k photo lagate hai na taki kauno muthe nai; hum eiya lagata hu taki kauno pitenahi"

The wide-eyed supernatural hero in Rajkumar Hirani's 'PK' finds unique ways to keep his face away from harm or insult, while searching for his way home. His peculiar dressing sense and his unique approach to life had the crowd cheering.

4. Haider

"Aap election ladneka intezhar kijiye chacha, meri ladai toh suru ho gayi hai"

Faced with his father’s sudden disappearance and unable to contain his anger at his mother's new affection, Vishal Bharadwaj’s Haider struggles to seek the truth and find peace. Vishal's genius emerges in the lines he pens for his Shakespearean adaptation.

5. Kick

"Mere baare mei itna mat sochna, dil mei aata hu, samaj mei nahi"

What's a Salman Khan movie without its dialogues? Apart from stripping his shirt, to packing in a few kicks and punches, Salman does the standard – mouth some whistle-worthy lines. Much of the movie’s fate depends on these lines, and writer Rajat Aroraa delivers. It might not match the iconic 'Dirty Picture' lines he gave Vidya Balan, but for Salman, this should suffice.
