Can Shah Rukh break Aamir’s '3 Idiots' record?

Considering Salman Khan was unable to break Aamir Khan’s ‘3Idiots’ box-office record, despite putting up a good fight with ‘Ek Tha Tiger’, the focus now shifts to Shah Rukh Khan’s next release ‘Jab Tak Hai Jaan’.

Will Shah Rukh be able to achieve what Salman couldn’t?

Touted as the most powerful in the industry, Aamir has always enjoyed a great run at the box-office.

Online records confirm a staggering US$72.77 million profits for ‘3 Idiots’, a benchmark that ‘Ek Tha Tiger’ couldn’t break by clocking only US$ 58.02 million. Although Salman did make an impressionable attempt, he was unable to match up to Aamir.

Now, it’d be interesting to see how Shah Rukh fares in his box-office report card.

Even though ‘3 Idiots’ was released way back in 2009, it has achieved a historical status at the box office collections, one that has till date remain unbroken.

Its success was highlighted even by international publications like the New York Times and UK’s Guardian.

And, now  with Yash Chopra’s big-budgeted, magical romance ‘Jab Tak Hai Jaan’ ready for launch, there’s much speculation surrounding its box-office fate and whether it will out-do Aamir’s magical, track record.

But, the fact that Aamir’s ‘Talaash’ will follow within two weeks of ‘Jab Tak Hai Jaan’, makes it evident that SRK might not enjoy a fun run for too long.

“It’s very rare that movies of Shah Rukh and Aamir are pitched against each other. With the release so close to each other, it will definitely eat into each other’s profits and impact their box-office run,” reasons our source.

Bollywood romance ‘Jab Tak Hai Jaan’ is estimated to be made on a budget of US$ 9.45 million might benefit from the Diwali release and the fact that it’s legendary moviemaker Yash Chopra’s last work.

The Aamir-starrer thriller is made at an estimated cost of US$ 8.51 million.

With the industry being dictated by the “100 crore club”, basically movies that make a record Rs100crore (Dh13m), will Shah Rukh be able to nudge Aamir out of the big league.
