‘Munna Kancha’ reveals all: Sanjay Dutt speaks

While he left people intimidated with his larger than life persona as Kancha Cheena in the ‘Agneepath’ remake by the same name, one surely can’t forget his portrayal of Munnabhai in the iconic ‘Munna Bhai MBBS’ and ‘Lage Raho Munna Bhai’.

But, ask Sanjay Dutt to choose between Munnabhai and Kancha Cheena and he plays it smart, “How about Munna Kancha?”

Sanjay says that as an actor he is never under pressure to live up to the audience's expectations. "As an actor, I'm never worried. I give myself to the director. But I'm sure the director has a lot of pressure," he says.

In fact, the actor also confesses that he never prepares for any of his roles. Most of the times he is spontaneous while portraying any character.

Sanju admits that he owes a lot to the film and the character of Munnabhai aka Murli.

“The film changed me a lot. It gave me a lot. ‘Munna Bhai’ had a huge impact on my career, my personal life and my image… it changed it all. I’m sure that explains how special the film is to me,” says Dutt.

Interestingly, ‘Munna Bhai MBBS’ and its sequel were recently screened during the Vidhu Vinod Chopra festival to mark the filmmaker’s three-decade long journey in the Indian film industry.

While in ‘Vaastav’ he convincingly essayed the gangster Raghubhai, in the ‘Munna Bhai’ series Sanjay played the endearing bad-boy-turns-good.

Both have been career defining films for Sanjay Dutt. Hence we couldn’t resist but ask Sanju which role and film are closer to him. He contemplates, smiles and quips, “Actually both. I can’t choose one.”

For the future, Sanju has a number of films lined up.

‘Son of Sardar’ along with Ajay Devgn, ‘Zilla Ghaziabad’ with Arshad ‘Circuit’ Warsi and Vivek Oberoi and Ram Gopal Varma’s ‘Department’ are some of Baba’s films this year.
