British boxer Amir Khan plans to divorce his estranged wife Faryal Makhdoom, despite her recently issuing an apology to his parents.

The 30-year-old boxer and his wife split in acrimonious style earlier this year, with Amir accusing Faryal of cheating on him, but a reconciliation was thought to be on the cards after she apologised to Amir and his family.

However, a source explained to The Sun newspaper: "Faryal is distraught. For weeks she's felt they were moving towards a resolution. He's been pushing her to make this statement.

"And on Wednesday Amir spent the night at the family home and everything was back to normal, so it felt like the right thing to do.

"A few hours later he's online saying everything is all over."

Amir is said to have spent weeks telling Faryal - who has a three-year-old daughter called Lamaisah and another unborn baby on the way - that they could rekindle their romance if she built bridges with his family.

But Amir dashed those hopes on Thursday, confirming on Twitter that he still plans to press ahead with a divorce.

He wrote on the micro-blogging website: "Thanks to Faryal for clearing up the accusations she had made about my family in the past which were false.

"Unfortunately it didn't work out between Me and Faryal and we are still going ahead with the divorce. We are in good talking terms.

"We have to think about our daughter Lamaisah who I will always be there for. I wish Faryal all the very best for the future."

Amir's statement came shortly after his estranged wife issued an apology, saying she wanted to "start afresh".

She explained: "I now recognise that all this infighting between me and my in-laws has had a terrible effect on my husband and I, and for that I would like to sincerely apologise.

"My daughter and unborn child do not deserve a broken home. That is why I have decided that it is time to put our differences behind us and start afresh."
