Bigg Boss ratings fall behind melodramatic Indian TV soap's

Indian soap operas which run through the prime time space is dominated with teary eyed daughter-in-laws and oppressive mother-in-laws with over the top make-up.

These soap operas are outlandish with melodramatic events interspersed with theatrical music but oddly mundane in expression of everyday life of an ordinary viewer.

These TRP’s (Target rating points) driven shows thrive on the beleaguered daughter-in-law and tyrannical in-laws. Where plight of a women is played up to the maximum tear jerking moments.

Recently the TRPs were announced and surprisingly few soaps with weak or deviated story-line garnered very high ratings.

But the TRPs also reflect few soaps with strong social message topping the chart.

Color’s TV show 'Balika Vadhu' dealing with child marriage, second marriage, literacy has topped the charts with 5.8 points. While the popular reality show Bigg Boss Season 6 ratings read 2.5points.

But we take a look at few soaps that has high TRP ratings despite their slapdash script:

Saath Nibhana Saathiya (TRP: 4.8)

This show aired on Star Plus is about two cousins where one is shy and reserved the other is out spoken and bold.

An orphan brought up by her uncle (who is currently not seen in the soap) has a jealous cousin. Both sisters get married into the same family around which the story revolves.

The serial has no message since day one yet has managed to take the second place after ‘Balika Vadhu’.

Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai (TRP: 4.3)

Currently the longest running serial on Indian Television, this soap dwells around the life a couple who had an arranged marriage.

Although the start was interesting as it highlighted the girl’s fears, the story is currently drab. It is a big question as to how this serial has garnered so many TRP’s despite some hideous twists.

Sasural Simar Ka (TRP: 4.1):

Aired on Colors, this young and chirpy girl dreams of becoming a dancing superstar. Eventually the girl transformed into a responsible and caring housewife.

Initially a very simple plot, it now has a major twist with a new vamp entering the show. This bar dancer has captured the entire house to settle previous scores and has forced the entire family to live as poppers in their own bungalow.

With the current storyline, how did the soap win so many hearts?

Sapne Suhane Ladakpan ke (TRP:3.5):

The soap aired on Zee TV is of a city teen outspoken and bold is forced to stay in a small town with her aunt and cousin sister after her mother’s death

But she falls in love with a boy who resides in the same house but the boy’s mother despises her and plots to get the girl away from her son’s life.

Going by the story, this girl should be actually around 17 and marriage under the age of 18 is a crime in India.

How are the TRP’s soaring for this serial?
