Cinema watch: The top new releases this week in the UAE

After an action-packed weekend with the Avengers, we now shift focus to Bollywood, with two big releases – both love stories and both featuring star kids. While “Ishaqzaade” launches one – Boney Kapoor, “Dangerous Ishhq” marks the comeback of a yesteryear star-kid – Karisma Kapoor.

Based purely on merit, we’ll put our money on the former, only because it’s directed by Habib Faisal, who has made an impressive first impression with his directorial debut “Do Dooni Chaar”. Although Vikram Bhat has churned out quite a few impressive films in the past, we aren’t entirely sure whether setting a romance, based on past life regression, in 3D will reap any benefits.

Among the Hollywood line-up, it’s “The Five Year Engagement” that might evoke some interest, but many critics claim it’s not so much fun, after all. While Korean export “Sector 7” does appear intriguing, we hear it didn’t receive any favourable response from the audience globally. And, the last entrant, “Mercernaries”, also fails the litmus test, with a prominent movie review site marking it as a “dissatisfying and disheartening thriller”.

Ishaqzaade

The Story: An unlikely romance erupts in the land of hooliganism and small-town clan wars. Despite trying hard to resist falling in love, the ferocious Zoya ends up giving in to the affection of her aggressive rival Parma.

Dangerous Ishhq 3D

Director: Vikram Bhatt
Cast: Karisma Kapoor, Rajneesh Duggal and Jimmy Shergill
The Story: A romance that revolves around super-model Sanjana and the son of a big industrialist Aditya. After her lover goes missing, Sanjana is forced to revisit her past, in a bid to save him.

The Five Year Engagement
Genre: Comedy
Director: Nicholas Stoller
Cast: Jason Segal, Emily Blunt and Chris Pratt
The Story: A year after they first met, Tom proposes to his girlfriend Violet, but numerous unexpected events keeps delaying their wedding date, for, not one, but five years.

Sector 7 3D

Genre: Action
Director: Ji-Hun Kim
Cast: Ji-Won Ha, Sung-Kee Ahn and Ji-Ho Oh
The Story: A group of personnel at an isolated oil rig, Sector 7, must work as a team to fight a gigantic sea creature, 8,000 feet under the sea, before it kills them.

Mercenaries
Genre: Action
Director: Paris Leonti
Cast: Robert Fucilla, Kirsty Mitchelle and Rob James-Collier
The Story: After a military coup, Andy Marlow, an ex-British S.A.S serviceman turned mercenary is sent into the Balkans to rescue a US ambassador and his aide.
